Acne vulgaris or simply acne is a common skin condition that is characterized by non-inflammatory follicular papules or comedones. Inflammatory papules, pustules and nodules are the severe forms of the disease. This type of disease affects areas of the skin that have dense population of sebaceous follicles. Some of these areas include the face, the upper part of the chest and the back. Although severe acne is inflammatory, it can also manifest in non-inflammatory forms. Acne lesions can be pimples, blemishes, spots and zits.
Acne affects about 85% of the teenagers and this is attributed to an increase in the male sex hormones. In most of the cases, acne vulgaris normally disappears after about age 20. It is however not possible to determine how long the condition can last, some people in their thirties and even some in their forties have suffered from the disease.
This condition normally affects the face and the upper neck. Other areas that could be affected include the neck, chest, the back and the shoulders. Family or genetic history is one of the factors known to cause the disease. Other causes of the disease include hormonal activity for example menstrual cycles and puberty. Skin irritation and scratching can also start inflammation. Stress and accumulation of dead skin cells that block or cover the pores are other causes of the disease.
Some of the available treatments of acne vulgaris include topical and oral antibiotics. Hormonal treatment involving a combination of oestrogen and progesterone can also help in treating the condition. Other treatment methods include photodynamic therapy and laser treatment.
